When you hear the word balloon it might take you directly to a kid’s exuberantly loud and colorful birthday party, but what if I told you that balloons are making their way back to provide texture and dimension to luxurious installations? Yes, balloons can be a lush addition to create a unique landscape.
If you follow Sofia Ritchie on IG, you may be aware that the old-money-core ambassador got married a few months ago in the Antibes, in the French Riviera, in a luxurious over-the-top destination wedding ceremony at the magnificent Hótel du Cap-Eden-Roc. Before that, Sofia and her now husband, Elliot, had a smaller but luxurious wedding in their Los Angeles home garden. Framing the entrance, a welcoming all-white balloon installation was the sole decoration. It speaks volumes.

On this side of the pond, I experienced the magic firsthand. As a designer and creative director, not only I curate the idea for the invitations that will deliver the first glance to the event but I also interact with all the actors to communicate a solid vision and make it happen. While setting up the glamorous lavender whimsical wedding of anyone’s dream, I was speechless, in a good way, by the amazing balloon installation, even as the first elements were arriving.
Art came in the shape of balloons. It proved my point that balloons are a to-go decoration for a high-end setting. Four columns raised several feet above our heads as the first layer of the backdrop. Each one is wrapped in a different wallpaper on theme, the same motive as the invitation envelope liners. Details. Next, to give depth, two huge custom-sculpted white butterfly wings made their appearance, and front and center, to frame the beautiful picture, balloons, a countless amount of monochrome balloons in a shade of light lavender that I had not seen before. The secret to the color? A customized combination of different colors inside another, until the perfect shade is formed. And then repeat by the hundreds. All to frame the champagne cart that was uplifted as it took its designated place. On the cart, the beautiful cake, the topic of another story, and the His&Hers drink menu. I fell in love with balloons all over again, to the point that I am designing an event around them, but I will leave that one for another “in awe moment.” There is so much more behind the art of balloons than what meets the eye. Marcy outdid herself. She reminded me of a fairy with a magic wand in a fairytale story wedding. The GOAT!

And, just like that, balloons made their come back to elevate the decoration, front, and center. So, next time you hear the word balloon, don’t think about a rainbow garland on top of a cake, think of light transparency, monochromatic palettes, and texture. From your living room to a luxurious wedding by the water, the possibilities are endless and the wow factor will be too.
